What is Carabiner?
Carabiners are widely used in rope-intensive activities such as climbing, fall arrest systems, arboriculture, caving, sailing, hot-air ballooning, rope rescue, construction, industrial rope work, window cleaning, whitewater rescue, and acrobatics. They are predominantly made from both steel and aluminium. Those used in sports tend to be of a lighter weight than those used in commercial applications and rope rescue.
Often referred to as carabiner-style or as mini-carabiners, carabiner key rings and other light-use clips of similar style and design have also become popular. Most are stamped with a "not for climbing" or similar warning due to a common lack of load-testing and safety standards in manufacturing.
While any metal link with a spring-loaded gate is technically a carabiner, the strict usage among the climbing community specifically refers only to devices manufactured and tested for load-bearing in safety-critical systems like rock and mountain climbing, typically rated to 20 kN or more.
Carabiners on hot-air balloons are used to connect the envelope to the basket and are rated at 2.5, 3, or 4 tonnes.
Load-bearing screw-gate carabiners are used to connect the diver's umbilical to the surface supplied diver's harness. They are usually rated for a safe working load of 5 kN or more (equivalent to a weight in excess of approximately 500 kg).
Carabiner material type
The carabiner is one of the mountaineering equipment. Its material can be aluminum alloy, iron, stainless steel, etc., with different shapes. For example, aluminum alloy carabiners are round, runway-shaped, golden egg-shaped, square, triangular, etc. Most people choose aluminum alloy carabiners because they are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, and rust-proof, and are deeply loved by outdoor sports enthusiasts; stainless steel triangle carabiners can be used on sandbag ropes to cope with high-strength stretching and rapid hanging of items.


The Correct Use Of Climbing Buckles
Mountaineering buckles are very helpful to mountaineers as they can protect their safety and health. However, when using mountaineering buckles, it is important to use the correct methods to avoid negative consequences. When using the double loop 8-shaped knot method, one of the loop buckles cannot be used to connect the safety belt, mainly because the tension on the loop may cause the other loop to loosen; If a double loop 8-shaped knot is needed as a connection, it is best to hang a lock on the other loop and buckle it on the rope as secondary protection to prevent the knot from failing. If mountaineers adopt the most effective and correct methods, they can effectively protect our personal safety and alleviate some worries.

Types of Carabiner
D-Shape Carabiners
D-Shape Carabiners look like a capital, “D” and are very versatile. They move force away from the gate and toward the spine of the carabiner. They have a wider gate opening and are generally lighter than most carabiners. When it comes to clipping into protection, quick draws, and locking anchor points - D-Shaped Carabiners are your go to tool.
Offset D-Shape Carabiners
Offset D carabiners are sometimes referred to as asymmetrical or Modified-D carabiners. They are similar to D-Shape Carabiners except the design is exaggerated creating an even wider gate opening. They are the most popular design as they improve functionality due to it having a larger gate opening, lighter shape and stronger design.
Oval Shaped Carabiners
This is the classic carabiner that has been around for years upon years. They are inexpensive and great for climbing. It should be noted they are weaker than other shapes because of the weight transfer between the spine and gate. They also have a narrower gate opening and are fairly heavy.
HMS aka Pear Shaped Carabiners
These are oversized versions of the offset d-shaped carabiners. They are designed to be used when belaying. Climbers tend to prefer these types of carabiners especially when they need to belay devices.
Carabiner Vocab
Gate(1):The spring-loaded pivoting piece opposite the spine. The gate swings shut to close against the nose.
Standard – This gate is a solid tube shape, making it slightly heavier with more gate flutter due to increased mass.
Wire – This is typically a U-shape that hooks onto the nose. And while it has a lighter weight, it’s slightly less durable.
Straight vs. Bent – Used to describe both standard and wire, a straight gate runs in a continuous, straight line, while a bent gate has a slight angle in it. The former is usually reserved for clipping to a bolt or a piece of gear, while bent binders receive a rope more smoothly.
Double – This is a more recent innovation (also called twin gate), with two sets of rivets and two gates that open opposite each other, acting as a sort of locking mechanism.
Spine(2):This is the long section of the carabiner opposite the gate that usually has the strength ratings, certifications, and brand stamped on it. When a binder is under weight, most of the force is directed to the spine, which is the strongest individual section of the binder.
Rope Basket(3): The large bend at the top of the spine that the rope runs through. This open curve minimizes wear on the rope and the binder.
Runner End(4):This is the smaller bend opposite the rope basket where a runner would sit, but the rope, belay device, and other gear can also occupy this space.
Nose(5):At the top of the opening for the gate, this is where the gate is latched while closed. Some are notched to accept wire gates, but the key lock style is smooth, which prevents the binders from snagging on bolts and gear when cleaning.
Locking: A mechanism on the gate prevents the binder from accidentally opening; it’s required in certain situations, such as belaying and clipping in direct to the anchor. There are several types, listed below.
Screw – The gate is threaded and a metal cylinder must be manually spun up to cover the nose, which locks it closed.
Twist – The gate is sheathed in a spring-loaded cylinder that will only open when twisted into a certain position. These automatically lock when the gate shuts.
Magnetic – Magnets on either side of the nose keep metal prongs against the nose, which mechanically prevent the gate from opening. Pinch the sides of the gate to lift the prongs away from the nose and open it.

While carabiners are primarily used for climbing, they can be utilized for a variety of things both outdoors and around the house:
To hang bags or baskets.
As a key chain
To organize hair ties or rubber bands.
To lock your tent zippers from the inside.
To attach larger items to your backpack (think a Crazy Creek or an extra water bottle).
To latch into a waypoint or rope anchor while kayaking.
To link gear when traveling.
As a cinch for duffel bags (link the straps together over the top of the bag).
As a hammock hanger.
To secure your rain fly or tarp to a tree, rope or tent.
Materials and maintenance of carabiners
The appearance of the carabiner should be checked frequently. If there are signs of deformation or cutting, discard it immediately and no longer use it. If mud or iron filings invade the lock teeth, clean them immediately. Alloy steel carabiners should be coated with anti-rust agent after use and stored in special containers. If the carabiner is accidentally dropped from a high place (more than 2m) to a hard ground, even if its appearance is not damaged, its internal alloy parts may be seriously damaged and should be discarded to avoid reuse.
